ATTENTION DOG OWNERS: PARVO VIRUS WARNING

The Town of Southbridge Animal Control Officer would like everyone to be aware that there have been a few cases of Parvo confirmed in Southbridge.

Parvo is a virus spread through fecal contamination. Other dogs that sniff or step in infected, viral laced feces are exposed and risk disease.

Parvo is extremely contagious and can be lethal, especially to puppies and dogs in poor health.

The symptoms can include high fever, vomiting and bloody diahhrea. It is fast moving and can be dangerous even before symptoms occur.

It can be carried on the clothing and shoes of anyone who has come into contact with the virus.

Be diligent about not allowing your dog access to feces left behind by other dogs while out on walks, in the woods, etc.

We want to stress the importance of insuring that your pets are up to date on vaccines and not to socialize with dogs they do not know personally and can confirm they are also current on vaccines.

Vaccines are nearly 100% effective in preventing disease, so vaccinated dogs should be fine.

Please contact your veterinarian directly with any questions you have regarding Parvo, symptoms and vaccinations.

Special thanks to Dr. Kristine Sklenak of the Southbridge Veterinary Hospital and Donna Savoie of Pack of Paws.
